Biography

Dr. Rao Uppu is a professor of environmental toxicology at Southern University-Baton Rouge (SUBR), with adjunct appointments in the Department of Chemistry and the Graduate School. He is also an adjunct professor of pathobiological sciences at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Uppu obtained his PhD degree in biochemistry in 1988 and carried out his postdoctoral research in several NIH-funded projects in the areas of chemical carcinogenesis and oxidative chemistry/biology at the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases (Omaha, NE) and the Biodynamics Institute at LSU (Baton Rouge, LA). After a brief stay at the US Patent & Trademark Office (2001-2002), then located in Arlington, VA, Dr. Uppu joined SUBR in 2002 as a tenure-track associate professor and rose to the ranks of a full professor with tenure in 2007. Dr. Uppu has mentored numerous graduate students (MS and PhD) and postdoctoral fellows and has published over 65 articles in peer-reviewed journals and book series. He is an elected Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences, and was honored with numerous awards for teaching and research. Currently, Dr. Uppu directs the Environmental Toxicology PhD program and also the Health Research center at SUBR.

Research Interest

Dr. Uppu's research interests include analytical methods for biological reactive intermediates, biomarker discovery and validation, cell signaling by 'ozone-specific' oxysterols, and biomedical applications of core/shell nanoparticles.
